Depending on the installation, a complete commercial setup may include the cameras themselves, a Digital Video Recorder (DVR) or Network Video Recorder (NVR), hard-drive storage, Ethernet or coaxial cabling, Power over Ethernet (PoE) switches, dedicated monitors, power supplies and system software.

IP CCTV Systems

Internet Protocol (IP) CCTV systems use digital network cameras that send video data over Ethernet cabling. The cameras connect to a Network Video Recorder (NVR), usually via Power over Ethernet (PoE) switches which provide both the data connection and power through a single cable.

HD Analogue CCTV Systems

Modern HD analogue CCTV should not be confused with the blurry, low-resolution analogue equipment of the past. Current HD-over-coax systems are capable of producing sharp, high-definition images.

These systems use coaxial cabling to transmit video to a Digital Video Recorder (DVR). While they may require local or separate power supplies depending on the setup, HD analogue remains useful. Where existing coaxial cabling is in good condition and suitable for the proposed equipment, it may be possible to retain that infrastructure while upgrading the cameras and recorder. This can avoid unnecessary rewiring.

Hybrid CCTV Systems

A hybrid CCTV system incorporates both analogue and IP technologies into the same network. This is usually achieved using hybrid recording equipment, such as Viper hybrid DVRs, which have connections for coaxial cables while also being able to record IP cameras over a local network.

This approach is particularly valuable for commercial sites undertaking a phased upgrade. A business can retain specific existing analogue cameras that still perform well, while introducing new IP cameras for high-risk areas. Reusing suitable existing infrastructure is a practical way to manage commercial CCTV installation costs, though a site survey is always required to confirm compatibility.

What Are the Different Types of CCTV Cameras?

The physical shape of a camera does not determine its image quality. Camera selection is based on the area being monitored, lighting conditions, mounting positions, weather exposure, and the specific security objective.

Turret CCTV Cameras

Turret cameras have a compact, ball-and-socket design. They are flexible to position and are commonly used for both indoor and outdoor general surveillance. Depending on the model, they can offer good low-light and infrared capabilities without suffering from the internal glass reflections that sometimes affect dome cameras. Dome CCTV Cameras

These feature an enclosed dome housing. They provide a discreet appearance and are often selected for shops, schools, offices, and public areas. Vandal-resistant dome models are available where applicable, providing physical protection against tampering or accidental impact in low-ceiling environments.

Bullet CCTV Cameras

Bullet cameras have a visible, cylindrical body pointing in a specific direction. They act as a strong visual deterrent and are commonly used externally for perimeter monitoring and building elevations. While they look purposeful, their physical shape does not automatically mean they have a longer viewing range than a similarly specified turret camera.

PTZ CCTV Cameras

Pan, Tilt, and Zoom (PTZ) cameras can rotate, move up and down, and zoom in on details. They are often deployed across large yards, industrial premises, campuses, and wide external areas. They can be actively controlled by a user or configured to follow automated preset tours, tracking movement where supported.

One practical limitation of a PTZ camera is that it can only view one direction at a particular moment. If it is zoomed in on an entrance, for example, it cannot simultaneously record activity along another boundary. Fixed cameras may therefore still be required where continuous coverage of important areas is needed.

ANPR CCTV Cameras

Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) cameras are specifically designed to read vehicle registrations at entrances, car parks, and controlled industrial access points. Reliable number-plate capture involves more than pointing an ordinary CCTV camera towards a road. The camera angle, distance, vehicle speed, lighting, and specific camera technology all determine whether the system successfully captures moving plates.

Thermal CCTV Cameras

Thermal cameras detect heat signatures rather than visible light. They are used for long-range perimeter detection, large external sites, and environments with exceptionally difficult lighting or heavy fog. Thermal imaging serves a different purpose from conventional visible-light cameras and is normally selected where there is a specific detection requirement that conventional cameras cannot meet as effectively.

Low-Light and Infrared CCTV Cameras

A high megapixel count alone does not determine how useful a CCTV camera will be at night. A lower-resolution camera with specialised low-light sensors can sometimes provide more usable night-time footage than a standard high-resolution camera that struggles in darkness. Most modern commercial cameras include built-in infrared (IR) illumination, though supplementary external lighting is occasionally required to cover large, unlit areas.

CCTV Resolution: Does More Megapixels Mean Better CCTV?

Viper equipment is available in several resolutions, including 4K options. However, not every installation requires 4K cameras.

Resolution should be balanced against the field of view, the distance to the subject, available lighting, and what actually needs to be identified. Unnecessarily increasing resolution across dozens of cameras places heavier demands on network bandwidth and significantly increases the amount of hard-drive storage required to retain the footage.

CCTV Recorders: DVR vs NVR

Digital Video Recorder (DVR)

Typically associated with HD analogue and coaxial-based CCTV systems. The DVR receives analogue signals, digitises the video, and stores it on internal hard drives. Viper hybrid DVRs can manage both coaxial and network camera inputs.

Network Video Recorder (NVR)

Typically associated with IP and network CCTV. An NVR receives encoded digital video streams directly from the network. Viper NVRs manage recording, playback, and storage for IP camera arrays.

CCTV Hard Drives and Video Storage

Commercial recorders use specialised surveillance-grade hard drives designed to withstand continuous data writing. The amount of storage a business requires depends on the number of cameras, recording resolution, frame rate, compression settings, and whether the system records continuously or only when motion is detected.

PoE Switches and CCTV Network Infrastructure

Power over Ethernet (PoE) simplifies IP camera installations by allowing a single Ethernet cable to carry both the data connection and the electrical power to the camera.

In commercial settings, IP cameras are typically connected back to PoE switches. For larger sites or installations spanning multiple buildings, network capacity and cable distance limits must be carefully planned, and fibre-optic links may be used to connect distant parts of the network back to the main recorder.

CCTV Cabling

The principal infrastructure for a system usually consists of Ethernet (Cat5e/Cat6) cabling for IP setups, or coaxial cabling for HD analogue systems. Fibre optics are utilised for longer network distances.

A common misconception is that "wireless CCTV" means an installation with no cables. While secure wireless links can transmit data across a yard where digging a trench is impractical, the cameras themselves still require a power source, and the receiving equipment must be connected to the site's network backbone.

Monitors and CCTV Workstations

Depending on how the system is operated, footage may be viewed on dedicated wall-mounted monitors, accessed via office PCs, or managed through control-room workstations with multiple displays. Not every CCTV installation requires a permanently dedicated monitor if the footage is primarily used for post-incident review.

Remote CCTV Viewing

Appropriately configured Viper systems can provide authorised remote access depending on the equipment and network configuration. This allows facilities managers or site owners to view live cameras or check recordings from smartphones, tablets, or remote PCs. Access must be securely configured and restricted only to authorised personnel.

CCTV Analytics and Smart Detection

Depending on the specific model, Viper cameras and recorders can provide analytical features such as person and vehicle classification, line crossing, and intrusion detection. Depending on the system and configuration, these features can help distinguish relevant activity from general scene movement and reduce unwanted alerts.

How Do You Choose the Right CCTV System?

Selecting a system should not begin by asking "How many cameras do we need?" or "How many megapixels?". The starting point should always be: "What does the CCTV system need to achieve?"

An installer considers whether an area requires general observation or precise facial identification. They assess entrances, vehicle movements, night-time lighting, retention goals, and future expansion requirements. These operational objectives determine the appropriate cameras, recording equipment, storage, and infrastructure.

Can an Existing CCTV System Be Upgraded?

Where suitable, existing infrastructure such as coaxial cabling, Ethernet runs, racks, containment, and power supplies may be retained.
